This was our last full week of school before the summer break and MSR Elementary was super busy!! ☀️
On Monday, our school had some fun in the sun at Massey Pool! 🌊
Thursday afternoon brought our graduation ceremony where we took some time to celebrate the amazing grade 8 students who will be moving on to high school next year! 🎓
Friday was our Popsicles with Pops Father’s Day Celebration! Our students performed a special concert and shared treats with their dads! 🎤
And throughout the week, we held a special Spirit Week to celebrate the school year coming to an end. From beach gear, florals and formal wear to wacky hair and twinning with friends, our students had a lot of fun dressing up and celebrating the great year we had together! 🏖️🌸🪮👗👯

Leading into Indigenous People’s Day coming up on June 21st, our Mayfield Campus has been learning about two beautiful cultures: Inuit and Metis.
Ms Cassandra taught us all about the Inuit culture of music. Students learned about “katajjaniq” (throat singing), “qilaut” (traditional Inuit drum) and so much more amazing things!
Mr Nathan shared all about the history of Metis peoples, the Red River Cart and the importance of his “la sayncheur flayshii” (Metis Sash)!

A couple of weeks ago, our Seedlings classroom had so much fun bringing the farm theme to life! 🌾🐑
They had a special visit from Farmer Madison of Fenek Farms, who brought along George the lamb, Cheese the bunny, and some adorable chicks and ducklings. The children loved meeting the animals, asking questions, and learning all about life on a farm. 🐇🐥🦆
To make the farm theme even more hands-on, the children also became little farmers themselves by making butter! 🧈 After lots of shaking, patience, and teamwork, they watched heavy cream transform into fresh butter right before their eyes. The best part? Tasting their hard work, of course! 😋

MSR Elementary had its annual Pride Celebration this afternoon! 🌈
Our students were able to spend time making friendship bracelets, creating flags representing their personalities, reading books about inclusion and loving yourself, and putting together a collaborative mural (coming soon)! They ended the day with freezies and writing positive messages with sidewalk chalk! What a wonderful day to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and accepting yourself and others unconditionally! 💖

In a Montessori environment, play dough is more than just a creative activity—it is a purposeful work that supports a child’s development in many ways. When students roll, pinch, press, and shape the dough, they strengthen the small muscles in their hands that are essential for future writing and self-care skills.
It is very exciting when our play dough magically changes colours as we engage with it in different ways to strengthen our skills!

This week the MSR Elementary Campus recognized National AccessAbility Week! Taking place from May 31st - June 6th, this is a great time to recognize the valuable contributions and leadership of people with disabilities and to celebrate and support ongoing efforts to remove barriers and make a more accessible Canada!
On Wednesday, we participated in Red Shirt Day to promote accessibility and inclusion! And this afternoon our school held a Walk and Roll event in partnership with Neil Squire at the South Leisure Centre Park! We walked and ran around the track to raise awareness for National AccessAbility Week! 👟🏃

🎶💧 Making Music with Water! 💧🎶
Our extended hours students recently explored sound and science through a fun water xylophone activity!
Follow these simple steps to create your own:
1. Gather your glasses: Line up identical glass jars in a row.
2. Add water: Fill the first glass almost to the top with water. For each subsequent glass, use slightly less water.
3. Add color (optional): Add a few drops of different coloring to each glass to make it look visually appealing.
4. Play: Start from one end and tap the glasses in sequence to play a beautiful melody.
At Montessori, we love providing opportunities for children to learn through exploration, creativity, and discovery. What a fun way to combine science, music, and joyful learning!

This week at MSR elementary, the grade 6-8 students had a special art presentation from Credell Simeon from csCreatives Studio! Our students learned about the importance of sustainability in art and were able to create beautiful paintings using upcycled materials! 🎨🖌️👩🎨

“Like a little butterfly, I learn by exploring the world around me.” 🦋
Our little butterfly larva have undergone their transformation into beautiful little butterflies!
Students were thrilled to see the Painted Lady Butterflies emerged from their pupas when we returned to school on Monday. They have been monitoring and caring for the little creatures every day since we first brought them to school. They are now strong enough to be released into the world for their own adventures.
